for clarinet nonette
Soon after hearing Jorge Variego at The University of Florida, I knew that I wanted to write a piece showing off everything he knew how to do with the clarinet. Using a lot of what I had learned from recording the hive, I decided to record Jorge performing several hours of guided improvisations from which I wrote Una passeggiata per la Piazza San Marco. This collage technique rooted in recording is the basis of most of my work right up to the present day. I approach accoustic composition as an electroacoustician, starting with the sound first and using notation to describe recorded sound.
